About this limited edition photograph:
The photograph “Mapping Dutton’s Cave” was created in Dutton’s Cave in Fayette County, Iowa.
In 2018, the Iowa Grotto (National Speleological Society) met at Dutton’s Cave with the goal of mapping this short cave. About half of those who attended were new to surveying a cave, so we took our time listening to those who were experienced and getting hands-on with the process. Half of the cave is easy to traverse due to the rocky floor, but the lower passage was a low crawl through mud and freezing cold water. Good thing we brought out wetsuits!
I created this photograph by setting up my Canon 80d camera with a Tokina AT-X 116 PRO DX II lens on a tripod and photographing the cavers as Ed Klausner gave instructions on how to survey.
